Marvin with Berina, Baby and Draco - 1997.
How it all began.
Marvin Mason first developed his love and passion of working with dogs as a boy while growing up on a farm. Whether they were herding or hunting, the dogs were a vital part of farm life. Being around the animals on a daily basis allowed Marvin to become familiar with the dogs' routine behaviors. While working with and training dogs to accomplish tasks on the farm, Marvin learned that to understand animal behavior, patience is key. This patience is critical for the trainer as well as the animal because maintaining a calm demeanor will grant the dog the ability to feel comfortable and confident while he/she develops an understanding of what the trainer needs from them to be successful.
Marvin began his professional schooling at American Canine Academy, attending 1993-1994. He gained a significant amount of experience and knowledge from National K-9 School of Dog Trainers in Columbus, Ohio where he received his Certified Master Trainer Degree in 1995. While enrolled at National K-9, Marvin was able to further his understanding of animal behavior through hands-on training with the essentials like basic obedience. He then broadened his skill set by participating in more complex courses like drug tracking and scent detection, handicap assistance, and search and rescue work. Marvin also had the opportunity to train dogs with law enforcement and their handlers.
Marvin's canine companion for this journey at National K-9 was his Rottweiler, Berina. Berina learned to retrieve objects, assist with wheelchairs and doors and provided physical support and stability. She also performed other physical necessities like turning on a light switch and retrieving the mail. Berina mastered so many skills and became such an accomplished student that Marvin frequently showcased her abilities to interested clientele once he established Berkeley K-9.
Since 1995, Berkeley K-9 School for All Dogs has been serving West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle and surrounding areas. Marvin is committed to enriching the lives of others by providing services to help with the most basic, common canine issues to the more intricate tasks like assisting in the preparation of a therapy dog. Marvin takes great pride in helping dogs and their handlers reach their full potential in creating a calm, peaceful environment for pet and human alike.
